An Op-Ed Piece from our March issue, enjoy!
George Zimmerman is arguably one of the most hated men in America. You would think that after being acquitted of the senseless murder of 17 year old Trayvon Martin the man would have the wherewithal to move out of the spotlight and live his life in quiet exile. Nope, not George. On the contrary he seems to see himself as a celebrity of sorts, an icon if you will. So much so that he has decided he will compete in a celebrity boxing match against Earl Simmons, more commonly known as DarkManX or, DMX. The fight is scheduled to take place on March 1st.
My first thought upon hearing of this was one of complete and utter disbelief. All I could think was that this must be a joke or prank of some sort. It was, however, very real. The story was first reported by TMZ.
Zimmerman was approached by Damon Feldman a celeb boxing promoter. Feldman offered to pay him an undisclosed sum if he agreed to step into the ring and take on any challenger. Zimmerman jumped at the opportunity, and when Feldman said any challenger he meant it. There was even an email address include in the article so that anyone, be they famous or not, could get a crack at Zimmerman.
Only a few days later it was reported that DMX would be his opponent. Apparently other rappers, most notably Jayceon Taylor who is known as Game, were chomping at the bit to get a chance to inflict what they believed to be a justifiable beat down him. DMX was even quoted as saying, “I would not be boxing for me… I’d be boxing for the legacy of Trayvon Martin and his family.” He even went on to say that he was doing this for, “every black person that has been wronged by the system.”
The only question I have, and I sincerely hope that there is other that share this sentiment, is who does Zimmerman think he is? Or better yet, where in his head did he equate the cold blooded murder of an innocent child as a claim to fame? The craziest thing is that there were actually people that wanted to see this fight happen. I am all for the idea of justice for Trayvon and his family, but the fact is the system that was designed to do just that failed them and did so miserably. Does this mean we should be vigilantes that take the law into their own hands? That is a question you must ask yourself personally, the answer to which will give you insight into who you are and where you stand on racial equality and the justice system in this country of ours.
As for Zimmerman, well since the trial he has had his run-ins with the law. The first with his now ex-wife who said he smashed her iPad in argument. Witnesses quoted him as stating that he was “above the law.” The second incident was a domestic dispute with his girlfriend. She originally stated that he choked her but has since recanted that statement. In both cases there was thought to be a firearm present but there was no evidence to support initial claims. Both of these incidents lend further truth to what was stated during the murder trial. Zimmerman is a mentally unstable egomaniac on a power trip. If anyone allows this fight to happen it would only serve to feed his ego, and also tarnish the memory of Trayvon Martin and the immense amount of pain and suffering his family still endures knowing that his murderer is living his life as a free man.
Luckily, it seems that Feldman has come to his senses. He has cancelled the fight amid public outcry that eventually led to a petition on Change.org. People are so against this happening that it has even led to petitions being written to White House and a Facebook page dedicated to stopping the bout. A rep for DMX has also denied that his client ever agreed to the fight. Unfortunately, not everyone is of the same mind about preventing this disrespectful and outright repulsive spectacle from taking place. A streaming company known as FilmOn.com is looking to obtain the rights for the Zimmerman fight. Hopefully Feldman will have the good sense to decline the offer and allow us all to forget that there was even a thought of this happening.
I personally think that every media outlet should boycott any Zimmerman related news for all time. So much so that after you read this article you should tear it out and burn it or at the very least black it out with permanent marker, just make sure you read the article on the other side first. I would not want you to miss out on something that is actually interesting or newsworthy just because of that walking pile of human defecation they call George Zimmerman.
