The first time I “saw” them was at Abilene’s, blitzed drunk, day three on a bender. I don’t remember much of the show, but I did wake up to a note on my phone: The Capitals = Awesomeness. Once I sobered up, I tracked this EP down and realized why I had written that simple statement. Nothing more really needs to be said. I could just end this review right at ‘The Capitals = Awesomeness’.
It would be over simplifying to call the ‘Crans EP’ indie pop. There is a blue grass and psychedelic aspect to The Capitals’ music that makes it stand out from the crowd. Writing this review had me shaking my shoulders back and forth like the pathetic white boy I am, in an attempt to dance while sitting in front of my computer.
The first time I listened to the album, I kept rewinding just to catch the lyrics. Did they really just sing “Messing with your mind until there is blood and spit and piss on your legs”? Yup. Fuck, this is good. Even though the EP was only four songs, it was hard to pick out a single song to recommend. Every song is the song to listen to. I can’t wait to see what else The Capitals have to offer with their next release. Until then, I am going to keep the Crans EP on repeat.
Song to listen to: Slow Kids in Fast Cars
